TRIP TO HESCO DEHRADUN AND THE MODEL VILLAGE BHARWAKATAL TEHRI GARHWAL

On 12th of January 2021 the students of M.Sc. Environment Management with Natural Resource Management (NRM) as an elective subject went on a trip to Himalayan Environmental studies and conservation organization (HESCO), Dehradun. The organization derives inspiration from the villages and device solutions for their problems. It helps them to focus on their economic and developmental needs and encourages them to tap local resources that open up new avenues to self-reliance. The students were shown the prototypes of their innovative ideas, like making of Briquet, vermicomposting, Watermill (Gharat), low-cost geysers, low-cost Gober gas plant, etc. After that students had an interactive session with Dr. Anil Joshi an awardee of Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan. Post lunch, the students were taken to a Model Village name Bharwakatal Tehri Garhwal. This village has 18 families who are practicing sustainable development by promoting organic farming, rearing of ornamental fish, cultivation of mushrooms, poultry, and Ecotourism. The students interacted with the villagers which gave them an insight into the success of this program.

TRIP TO NAVDANYA NGO

The students of M.Sc. Environment Management with Natural Resource Management (NRM) as an elective subject went on a trip to Navdanya NGO, Dehradun on 18thof December 2020.  Navdanya is an Earth-centric, women-centric, and farmer-led movement for the protection of biological and cultural diversity. The students had an interactive session with few leading scientists working in Navdanya. The students were given a tour of the organization which showed them various approaches for the management of natural resources like organic farming, mixed crop farming, natural ways to resist pests and insects, vermicomposting, pit composting. The students were taken to a seed Bank in Navdanya where they were shown seeds of various species. That included rice, wheat, maize, pulses, and millets. The seeds were preserved naturally without any chemical preservatives. The visit showed the students a wonderful perspective towards organic farming and indigenous seed conservation.
