"Carbon Neutral Chandigarh through Urban Forestry"
On the 28th of December 2021, a special lecture was organized by Forest Research Institute, Dehradun for M.Sc. Forestry III semester students on “Carbon Neutral Chandigarh through Urban Forestry” under the subject ‘Forest Resource Management’.
Shri. Debendra Dalai IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests, Chandigarh, was the chief speaker of the session. He explained the concepts, principles, and management of urban forestry in Chandigarh. This includes soil & moisture conservation interventions of Sukhna Wildlife Sanctuary, Shivalik arboretum, Butterfly Park, Peacock Park, Bird Park, and Botanical Garden. He also described about the avenue plantations and its management, waste management, and clean use of energy – development of Chandigarh as a ‘Model Solar City’.

Through this special session, we came to know that in spite of having 114 sq. km. area with a population of 12 lakhs and same is the number of the vehicles, Chandigarh has developed the maximum number of greeneries (47% of green cover) and could be the modern model for other cities of India in curbing pollution and other environmental degradation.

We are extremely thankful and grateful to Shri, Debendra Dalai IFS for accepting our invitation and sharing his valuable knowledge. We also thank our course lecturer, Shri. R. Arun Kumar IFS, DCF, RS & FE, S&FM Division of FRI, Dehradun and our course coordinator, Dr. Vipin Parkash, Scientist-F (Forest Protection Division) for arranging such an informative special lecture.
