NAMASTE+ Exchange Student Program 2020

The NAMASTE+ Program gives researchers and students from India and Germany the chance to strengthen their skills in specific fields, as well as improve the bonds between the University of Goettingen and 12 Indian Higher Education Partner Institutions (HEIs, http://www.namasteplus.de/about-namaste/partners/).

One of these HEIs is the Forest Research Institute (FRI) Deemed to be University in Dehradun and my plan was to study one semester and gather data for a master thesis in Bangalore (UASB, IWST), before returning to Germany. I was granted the scholarship and my live long dream to not only visit but live in a culturally very different country came true.

I joined the M.Sc. Environment Management in the second semester, was taken in by the other students immediately and never felt left out. In the lectures I got to know a lot of new skills and information on Indias forests, pollution management and restoration of degraded land. However the highlights were field trips to locations around Dehradun to restored wasteland, Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Reserve and other locations, showing the beauty of Indias nature. I loved that we also got the opportunity to see a ceremony at the river Ganga in Haridwar or the Gurudwara in Paonta Sahib. Finally, after an exhausting field trip or a day filled with lectures, the peaceful and big campus of FRI gave me some room to relax and go for a run. During my stay in Dehradun I visited the city and Mussoorie, tried a lot of different dishes and had a great time with friends who accompanied me. Without them I would have been lost in the vast menu of Indian cuisine which I genuinely enjoyed after two weeks.

Unfortunately, the Corona virus set my endeavor to an abrupt halt after two and a half month. I definitely will visit India again in the future, to see places I couldn’t visit or meet some friends I made during my stay. I also want to express my gratitude to all the people I met at FRI, whom I couldn’t thank for the great time and their help due to my rushed leave.

Stay healthy and enjoy life!
